Uneven sides do not necessarily mean you need to start your whole project again. The first step is to work out whether your row stitch count is changing.
Why edges get uneven
A common reason is adding or missing a stitch at the beginning or end of a row. Other causes include inconsistent turning chains and tension changes.
Mark the first and last stitch
Place removable stitch markers at both ends of a row, then move them as you work. This makes it easier to identify the last stitch when it hides beside a turning chain.
Read the turning-chain instruction
Some patterns count a chain as a stitch, while others treat it only as height. Follow the pattern's specific instruction rather than guessing.
Count after every row
It takes only a short check to spot a mistake immediately. Use the same stitch total for each straight row unless the pattern says to increase or decrease.
Is it a tension issue?
When stitch totals match but the fabric looks uneven, compare the size of your stitches. Try relaxing your grip and working at a steady pace. A small practice swatch is less frustrating than unpicking a whole blanket.
Can blocking fix it?
Minor shape differences may improve with blocking for suitable fibres, but blocking cannot restore missing stitches. Follow care instructions for your yarn.
